With the banks withdrawing cheque guarantee cards, and then cheques themselves, we are in the process of agreeing to accept plastic cards. We will, as soon as all the legal work has been done, accept debit cards for payment of goods. There is, however a direct cost to us, both in having to hire the card reader, and also for every transaction that goes through, so we are having to make a 50p transaction charge, to help offset these costs. We hope to have this operational in the very near future.

PLEASE NOTE: we will only accept DEBIT cards. Credit cards will not be accepted for ethical reasons. Business credit cards will also not be accepted due to the costs involved.

High Cost of Fuel takes its toll!

Due to the ever increasing diesel costs, we have been forced to increase our delivery fee to £10 with effect from 1st April 2011. We have tried to absorb the price hikes for as long as possible, but regret that we are now having to increase the charge to try and cover our costs. It wasn’t that long ago that it was costing us around £50 for a tank of fuel, today we are almost having to pay £100!

First General Price Increase since 2001!

Due to ever increasing costs, we have been forced to review all our prices, and a general price increase came into force on 1st March 2010 – our first general increase since 2001!

We have also added some extra categories to help better reflect the items we are handling. A new price guide can be downloaded from the “Need Furniture? – Price Guide” page.

Essential Needs and the big freeze!

Since re-opening in the new year, we have had major problems in trying to get out to collect and deliver furniture. Our rear wheel drive Bedford Luton box van has been stuck several times during this prolonged spell of cold weather, and when mobile is slipping and sliding all over the road. This, coupled with the condition of the side roads, pavements and driveways (which provide us with major health & safety issues for our staff and volunteers), has meant that we haven’t been able to do any deliveries or collections this year. We are however, reviewing the situation on a daily basis, we apologise for any inconvenience caused by us having to postpone jobs and hope that a normal service will be resumed as soon as possible!

Essential Needs Launch Kindling Offer

In the course of providing furniture we find we have an abundance of good wood due to receiving broken pine beds, or tables. It goes against the grain (sorry!) to put this to landfill, so we are now offering big sacks of kindling (min 10kg) for £5. This offer is open to anyone, and is obviously subject to availability.

In need of some furniture for your home?

If you live in Harrogate & District and you are in receipt of an income based benefit, e.g. Income Support, Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit or Working Families Tax Credit, Disability Living Allowance or Incapacity Benefit, Essential Needs can provide you with good quality second-hand furniture and household goods for a modest charge. We are also able to accept referrals from Social Services, housing, and other agencies. Please contact us if you need more information regarding eligibility.

It couldn’t be simpler – just come along to our warehouse with proof of your benefit entitlement or a referral form. We will give you a membership card, valid for three months, which allows you access to our store, where you can choose the items you require. People’s circumstances change, hence the requirement to re-register every three months.

Each delivery is charged at £5, at a mutually agreed time. However, if no one is available to receive the goods, or we do not have clear access at that time, we reserve the right to charge a £5.00 redelivery fee, payable before the delivery is made.

We really do provide everything required to ‘turn an empty house into a home’, from pots and pans to bedding, from washers to cookers. As the stock is constantly changing, it is impracticable to list all that is available so it is worthwhile visiting periodically to see what is in stock.

Essential Needs of Harrogate urgently need all items of furniture and household goods, which we will collect from you, free of charge, at a mutually convenient time, usually within 3 – 5 working days of contact. No more worries about costly disposal or of contributing to the growing environmental problem of landfill sites. You can be content in the knowledge that your furniture will be helping someone less well off than yourself to ‘turn an empty house into a home’.

We do, however, reserve the right to politely decline to accept, at the driver’s discretion, any item offered depending on our needs at the time of contact, or the requirements of current safety legislation. (In particular, we can only accept upholstered items if there is a label attached affirming that it complies with the 1988 (or later) Regulations). If you would like to donate items or would like more information about Essential Needs please call us on 01423 870040 and discuss with a member of staff.
